Students participating in the B-HEAL Program are offered a specialized supplemental curriculum consisting of: a 3-unit course (Advanced Social Work Practice in Integrated Behavioral Health Care) and periodic workshops/ training that will also include their internship supervisor or other team members. This training program is intended to assist students in developing knowledge and skills based on HRSA’s Core Competencies for Integrated Health Care.

During their advanced generalist practice year, B-HEAL students will be placed in internships in which there is some degree of integrated health care as well as a focus on working with underserved populations. Integrated health care placements will help students learn to provide evidence-based screenings and interventions for substance use and mental health issues with cultural sensitivity and humility. Students will gain experience working with patients in brief time periods and as a member of an interprofessional team. Other skills students may acquire include: case management; creating psycho-educational materials; providing psychoeducation to family members; planning and leading treatment groups; making referrals, expanding referral sources, writing clinical notes and using electronic medical records. The emphasis of this grant project is on training graduate social work students in behavioral health care professions to work effectively with a variety of underserved populations which include members of racial, ethnic and sexual minority groups and persons living in rural areas.

Students who apply and are accepted as B-HEAL trainees will receive a $10,000 stipend over the course of their advanced year. Funding is contingent upon all students complying with the required attendance and participation as outlined. This project is only available to 2nd year full-time and 3rd  year part-time MSW students.
